Encaustic painting has survived from early Greco-Roman Egypt, where the famed Fayum portraits were
discovered. They were wax portraits painted on the burial casings of the deceased. They have survived
the passage of time, remaining fresh and vivid as when painted.
Encaustic paint combines refined beeswax, resin and pigment. The blocks of color must be melted and
then applied to the surface. Then the layers of paint are “burned in” with a heat source, to bind and fuse
the layers together. The very name Encaustic means, “to burn in.”  The finished work is then buffed to
sheen and requires no glass. They can be lightly buffed with a soft cloth to bring forth sheen.
